COPS TAKE DAP LEADER'S STATEMENT OVER TIES WITH SARAWAK REPORT, JUSTO

REPORTED BY THE MALAY MAIL

KUALA LUMPUR, September 4, 2015—
The police today hauled up opposition lawmaker Tony Pua for questioning over his alleged links to whistleblower website Sarawak Report’s (SR) editor Clare Rewcastle-Brown and former PetroSaudi International (PSI) director Xavier Andre Justo.
The Petaling Jaya-Utara MP spent half an hour giving his statement at the Bukit Aman police headquarters here as part of the police’s investigations on the leak of a batch of documents linked to PSI’s dealings with state-owned 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).
Pua said he was summoned under Section 124B of the Penal Code, which deals with activity detrimental to parliamentary democracy, and Section 124J of the same law, which covers the receipt of documents and publications deemed detrimental to parliamentary democracy.
I told them that I knew Clare and that I have met her in London once but that I completely do not know Justo and have never met him,” he said when met after questioning.
The DAP national publicity secretary noted that he was also asked to reveal what was discussed in his meeting with Rewcastle-Brown.
I answered that I would only give the answer to that if I were summoned to court,” he said.
I am guessing that what is important for them is whether I met Justo and whether I had anything to do with the information he shared with other parties,” Pua added.
Pua claimed he did not have the information, and only knew as much as he read from SR.
Swiss national Justo was recently sentenced to three years in prison in Bangkok, Thailand for blackmailing his former employer PSI with stolen information.
He allegedly handed the stolen information to “Malaysian businessmen” — later revealed to be The Edge Media Group owner Datuk Tong Kooi Ong and publisher Ho Kay Tat — who duped him of a US$2 million (RM8.49 million) payout.
Pua, who is currently facing a travel ban, added that the police had made copies of his passport for reference, which showed that he had only been out of the country once to the UK on January 21 and to Singapore on March 19

I asked the police why I could not travel, but they said they did not know either,” he said.
In late July, Pua was stopped by the Immigration Department from leaving to Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
He recently filed for a judicial review on the decision by the Immigration Department, which he said has not explained their reasons despite efforts to contact them.

I think the important questions they wanted to ask me were whether or not I know Justo and whether or not I was involved in the information that was presented by Justo,” he said.
I have no connection to any of that information aside from what I’ve read in Sarawak Report.” Pua was referring to information about the scandal-hit 1MDB, which he has frequently criticised.

RELATED: TONY PUA QUESTIONED AS WITNESS IN 1MDB PROBE

REPORTED BY THE MALAYSIAN INSIDER
Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua was questioned by the police today as a witness in the ongoing investigations into the controversial state-owned fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

He arrived at the Bukit Aman police headquarters in Kuala Lumpur at 2.10pm and was questioned by the D5 crime investigations unit under Section 124(b) and 124(j) of the Penal Code.
The DAP national publicity secretary said that he was asked by police if he knew Sarawak Report editor Clare Rewcastle-Brown and former PetroSaudi executive Xavier Andre Justo.
"I was questioned by police as a witness under Section 124 (b) and (j). The questions I was asked includes if I knew Clare and if I knew Justo and other related matters
"I answered that I knew Clare, having met her once in London but I do not know Justo and neither have I met him," he told reporters outside Bukit Aman.
Pua said that he was also asked by police about details of his conversation with Rewcastle-Brown.
"Questions like what was discussed (in the meeting with her), I said I would only answer these questions if the case was brought to court," he added.
He was accompanied by his lawyer Mohd Haijan Omar and Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng.
Pua said the police were interested to know if he had met Justo.
If I was involved in the information Justo had presented. I had not received any of the information from Justo except from what I read from Sarawak Report."

Justo was previously reported as saying that he had met with Malaysian opposition leaders and media owners in Singapore before he was arrested in Thailand on June 22.
The Swiss national, who was recently sentenced to three years in jail for blackmailing his former employer, admitted to meeting these individuals in Singapore to negotiate about selling certain documents from PetroSaudi.
Pua said police had taken a copy of his passport that showed his journey to the United Kingdom on January 21 and to Singapore on March 19 this year.
The DAP lawmaker said that he was still under restrictions to travel overseas.
"I still cannot travel overseas and the appeal for the case to challenge this restriction order will be heard in court in October.
"I filed this suit to challenge the order as the Immigration Department did not return with a response to the letter I had sent."
Pua has been one of 1MDB's strongest critics and had exposed many of the state investment vehicle's mismanagement and financial scandals.
