REPORTED BY MALAYSIA TODAY

KOTA BARU, (MALAY MAIL ONLINE) December 7, 2015–
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) said it recently met with the Middle East donor of the RM2.6 billion said to have been deposited into Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s private bank accounts, according to a New Straits Times (NST) report today.

But the newspaper also cited MACC investigations division director Datuk Azam Baki as saying that he was not able to disclose further details, including the donor’s identity as the probe has yet to be concluded.

Investigations into the case are still ongoing. Once we have completed our investigation, we will hand over the findings to the Deputy Public Prosecutor, who will decide on the next course of action,” he was quoted as saying to reporters at an event in Kota Baru, Kelantan today.

He reiterated the MACC’s promise to provide updates from time to time on the investigation.

Azam was also reported saying he will probe leaked information on social media on MACC officials’ visit to the Middle East.

On August 5, MACC said the RM2.6 billion came from the Middle East, adding that it had obtained an explanation from the givers regarding the “donation” which the anti-graft body said is unrelated to state-owned 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), which is being separately scrutinised by the Auditor-General and Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee.

According to the MACC then, it had found four letters that were given to the bank when the RM2.6 billion amount was deposited into Najib’s account, with the bank documents stating that the contribution was a “donation”.

On December 3, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi read out a statement prepared by Najib to the Dewan Rakyat, saying the identity of the donor of the RM2.6 billion amount cannot be revealed as the case is still being investigated by Malaysian authorities.

However, we feel that we must inform the House that the MACC has identified the donor, and that Bank Negara Malaysia has also been informed on the opening of the bank account,” the statement said.

Last Saturday, the MACC said it recorded Najib’s statement on the RM2.6 billion deposited into his accounts in 2013 and SRC International Sdn Bhd, adding that he had cooperated well in the meeting that lasted two and a half hours.

SRC International was formerly a subsidiary of 1MDB, but is now parked under the Finance Ministry headed by Najib.

The RM2.6 billion figure first surfaced through a US-based paper Wall Street Journal’s report in July on the purported discovery by government investigators of a money trail of that amount ending in Najib’s accounts.

Najib has said that he has not taken public funds for personal gain, but the RM2.6 billion controversy has remained the centre of media and public attention.

The issue erupted when the Wall Street Journal and whistleblower [sic.] website Sarawak Report exposed the transaction based on leaked documents from Malaysian investigators.

REPORTED BY MALAYSIAKINI

KOTA BARU, December 7, 2015–
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) had sent a team to the Middle East to meet with the individual who donated RM2.6 billion, which was deposited into Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's personal bank accounts.

According to the New Straits Times, MACC investigations division director Azam Baki said the meeting was held recently.

However, he could not disclose further details, including the identity of the donor, as investigations were ongoing.

MACC, which had confirmed the RM2.6 billion was a political donation, is investigating the matter with regard to gratification.

The colossal sum was transferred ahead of the 2013 general election.

The issue erupted when the Wall Street Journal and whistleblower [sic.] website Sarawak Report exposed the transaction based on leaked documents from Malaysian investigators.

Critics, however, refused to believe that the RM2.6 billion was a donation.

Former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who has been calling for Najib's resignation, had claimed that those in the Middle East are not so generous.

On Saturday, the MACC recorded a statement from Najib regarding this matter as well as the transfer of RM42 million from SRC International into the prime minister's accounts.

The RM42 million from the Finance Ministry-owned firm was transferred via its subsidiaries in late 2014 and early this year.

Sources from the Prime Minister's Department and Attorney-General's Chambers had previously revealed that several senior officers were involved in quizzing Najib.

In a statement later, MACC also confirmed it met the prime minister for two and a half hours, and that he had given “good cooperation” throughout the process.

Najib has denied any wrongdoing and claimed that there is a conspiracy to topple him.

He was also initially expected to face the Dewan Rakyat and answer questions surrounding the allegations on its final day of sitting for this session.

Najib, however, was reportedly advised against making any personal explanations over concerns of alleged sub judice.

Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi instead delivered a three-minute explanation, without allowing any further questions.

MACC investigations division director Datuk Azam Baki was quoted as saying that the meeting with the donor was held recently in the Middle East.

He, however, did not reveal further details on the person's identity, saying the probe was still ongoing.

"Investigations into the case are still ongoing. Once we have completed our investigation, we will hand over the findings to the Deputy Public Prosecutor, who will decide on the next course of action.

"However, we cannot simply disclose results of the investigation," he was quoted as saying in the report.

Azam also said the leakage of information on social media regarding his officers going to the Middle East would be investigated.

Najib has been repeatedly criticised over the donation, a large portion of which was put in his accounts shortly before the general election held in May 2013.

Zahid told the Dewan Rakyat last week that the identity of the donor had been identified and confirmed that the money did not come from state-owned investment firm 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

It was reported on Sunday that MACC recorded Najib's statement over issues concerning a former 1MDB subsidiary SRC International and the RM2.6 billion donation.

MACC had reportedly also recorded the statements of Low Taek Jho and SRC International director Datuk Suboh Md Yassin earlier.
