Dr Xavier claimed immigration officers said the ban came direct from Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem.

REPORTED BY THE STAR ONLINE

KUCHING, December 6, 2015–
PKR vice president Nurul Izzah Anwar, who was scheduled to announce the party's Sarawak election candidates tonight, has been barred from entering the state.

When she landed at Kuching International Airport at 4pm, Nurul was told by state immigration officers that she had been banned entry.

"As soon as I arrived in Sarawak, there were immigration officers waiting to escort me back. New ban issued. An abuse of state powers!," the Lembah MP tweeted.

Nurul was travelling with an assistant and PKR's Seri Andalas assemblymen Dr Xavier Jayakumar onboard flight AK5210.

Dr Xavier claimed immigration officers said the ban came direct from Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem.

"They (officers) said the orders came from the CM's office. She will be on the 7.10pm flight back," Dr Xavier said.

"The CM should have been brave to have open and fair elections. Don't bar MPs."

He said Sarawak might have the most number of elected representatives banned from entering of any state in the country.

Sarawak PKR vice chief See Chee How said Adenan was resorting to "the same ways of the old administration".

"While I do agree with the state having immigration autonomy, but it should not be exercised arbitrarily. Not for abuse to bar political leaders."

Nurul Izzah was last week barred from entering Sabah after a photo of her and Jacel Kiram, the daughter of Jamalul Kiram III, who was behind the 2013 Sabah incursion, went viral on social media.

KUCHING, December 6, 2015–
PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar, who was photographed with the daughter of a Sulu separatist leader in Manila a few months ago, has been barred from entering Sarawak.

Nurul Izzah was stopped by immigration officers at the passport control counter soon after touching down at the Kuching International Airport at 4pm on an AirAsia flight.

Dr Xavier Jayakumar, another party vice-president who was with her on the flight, told reporters at the airport that immigration officers informed Nurul Izzah the order came from the Chief Minister's Office.

Nurul Izzah was last week barred from entering Sabah after a photo of her and Jacel Kiram, the daughter of Jamalul Kiram III, who was behind the 2013 Sabah incursion, went viral on social media.
The Lembah Pantai MP has also been summoned to the Parliament’s rights and privileges committee.

Sarawak has autonomy over its immigration regulations and has barred other opposition politicians, including DAP’s Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua and Seputeh MP Teresa Kok, and PKR’s Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli from entering the state.

Lawyer and activist Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan and Bersih 2.0 resource person Dr Wong Chin Huat have also been barred.

Dr Jayakumar said no reason was given for refusing Nurul Izzah entry.

It’s a black day for democracy and a black day for Sarawak.

I don’t know what the issue is (to bar Nurul). Only the Sarawak government knows.

The Sri Andalas assemblyman said Nurul Izzah's referral to the parliamentary rights and privileges committee should not be used as a reason to bar her from the state.

He also said he could not think of anything that would make Nurul Izzah a threat to Sarawak's security.

Dr Jayakumar said the only reason he could think of is that Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem was not “confident enough to face the people (of Sarawak in the coming state election)”.

Nurul, as the party's election director, flew to Kuching to announce the party's line-up for the state elections.

She also wanted to chair a meeting on the party's preparation and strategy on the seat allocation with their state Pakatan Harapan partners, DAP and Amanah.

Nurul Izzah, in a statement, said she was barred from entering under Section 65(1) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.

She said the act was to stop the mass migration of people from the peninsula to Sarawak and Sabah and not to stop MPs who came to the Borneo states on political business.

Sarawak PKR vice-president See Chee How said the action to bar Nurul “looked like Adenan is going back to the same old culture” of the administration of his predecessor, Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud.

He (Adenan) wants to be seen as a liberal, reformist. But he's not.

If he is, then he should not be barring opposition political leaders from the state.

See said the state should not use its autonomy over immigration to bar opposition politicians from coming to the state to do legal and legitimate business.

This act is an abuse of power by the state; instead they should focus on keeping Sarawakians safe from terrorists from outside as well as within the state, and not members of Parliament or representatives of legally-constituted bodies engaged in political activities and associations.” – Nurul 'Evita' Izzah

KUALA LUMPUR, December 6, 2015–
The MP for Lembah Pantai, Nurul Izzah Anwar, has condemned Sarawak’s action to bar her from entering the state as an abuse of immigration powers meant to control mass migrations of people from the peninsula to Borneo.
She said the Immigration Act, which provides separate powers to Sabah and Sarawak, clearly stated that it was not intended for use against members of Parliament or those entering the two states for political purposes.
Section 67 of the Immigration Act cannot be used to bar anyone from entering Sabah and Sarawak for political purposes,” she said, and pledged to return to Sarawak for efforts to improve the lives of Sarawakians.
Nurul, a vice-president of Parti Keadilan Rakyat, was stopped at Kuching airport while on her way to a party event this evening, at which she was expected to announce the party’s candidates for the coming state elections.
In a statement released here, Nurul Izzah said the Sarawak state government’s action “although well within the rights of the state’s powers” were contradictory to her right as a political figure and as a member of Parliament.
This act is an abuse of power by the state; instead they should focus on keeping Sarawakians safe from terrorists from outside as well as within the state, and not members of Parliament or representatives of legally-constituted bodies engaged in political activities and associations,” she said.
Nurul said she had gone to Sarawak to be in solidarity with local Keadilan leaders and future leaders for the coming state elections, and also for a project by the party to provide street lights, electricity and clean water in rural areas.
She urged supporters to “fill Sarawak with your calls for justice.
